Anne of Green Gables

We all have those books that made a big impression on us as children – Anne of Green Gables was one of those books for me. So I was thrilled to be asked to create a cover illustration for this classic, as part of the exhibit: Covering the Classics at Gallery 1888 in Orange, California. I really enjoyed drawing Anne’s “carrot” red hair and freckles – especially since I had pictured them in my mind so much as a kid. (This was one of the several favorite novels that I re-read frequently!)

Also it was fun to deliver original art – usually as an illustrator I am sending digital files to clients. Makes sense, and it creates (of course) a much faster workflow for the AD, but it really was fun to think about the actual artwork itself, and how I would add the title without the use of a digital resource. (I thought the pink banner would be fun.)

Here is the piece in my studio, framed and ready to be sent to California:

The show opens on November 30, and my work will be hanging along with the work of several other wonderful illustrators. Check it out if you are in town! The 1888 Center is a bookstore, gallery, and publisher in Orange, California (outside of Los Angeles) that supports the literary arts. Check out more HERE.
