Moulin Rouge at the SOI

About a week ago, I heard that the Society of Illustrators sketch night was going to be a Moulin Rouge theme, hosted by the incredible Bill Donovan. I took the opportunity, as my friend Kati said, to have “my own personal Toulouse-Lautrec experience.” Apparently I am not the only one who harbors this fantasy, as the place was packed! What could be better than a night of drawing French 19th Century fashion worn by fantastic models, with good friends? Check out the Instagram feeds of Margaret Hurst, Audrey Hawkins, and Kati Nawrocki to see some of their wonderful impressions from the evening. My own drawings are below. Thanks again to Bill Donovan and the Society of Illustrators for another night that reminds me of why I love what I do!

There was even had a Lautrec impersonator at one point!

What a fun night! I’d like to do it all over again…

PS – If you are interested in learning to draw people, consider registering for the Life Drawing Symposium, coming this June! Co-founded by myself and Melanie Reim: She and I and Margaret Hurst will be teaching workshops in Gesture, The Figure in Motion, Calligraphy, Mark-Making, and more. Between the three of us, we have over 80 years of experience drawing the model, and teaching others to do the same!

Drawing people is the foundation of it all – urban sketching, illustration, journaling, fine arts – find out more at: www.lifedrawingsymposium.com.
